You may be thinking about becoming a fire warden at your place of work and you may also be wondering what the duties include;

* taking the correct and effective action if a fire occurs,
* All escape routes remain clear at all times
* Dealing with any potential possible hazards in the workplace

If a fire does happen in your building any fire warden should carry out the following:

* Activate the nearest fire alarm call point to raise the alarm.
* Safely evacuate all members of staff from the premises.
* Safely have a plan in place to evacuate people with disabilities from the building.
* Call the fire brigade if required, but if your building in linked to a monitoring station the brigade will be called instantly.

Most building in the UK have a fire alarm and once activated by a smoke detector or a call point a fire warden should spring into action. Making sure everyone has left the building and everyone is accounted for.
Helping people who may need assistant if required and making sure any fire doors are shut to help stop the spread of the fire.

Even though you are the fire warden you must not re entry the building under any circumstance. Risking your life is not part of the role! Entering a burning building must only be undertaken by the fire service.

As a fire warden you should have organised a assembly point which is located a safe distance away from your building. A fire assembly point should have been organised when you had a fire risk assessment carried out. These are usually marked with a square blue sign with white arrows.

One part of a fire wardens role you may not be aware of is you will have to take charge of any fire risk assessments within your business. Any changes that occur to the fire risk assessment you MUST be aware of. So that includes any changes to your building, a new member of staff or new equipment. Just to highlight and make a point changing of equipment or new machinery does not apply to every business. But as you can imagine a large piece of machinery can apply new risks to a building.

Fire and Bomb alerts.

Practice fire alarms should be held ideally once a week. Now of course that’s not possible for every business. But as often as you can possible manage is the best! The one thing to remember is if you don’t test it and a fire does occur if you press a break glass and nothing happens, what then? Doesn’t bare thinking about does it. You should also keep a record of when you test it in a fire alarm “Log Book”. This should also be filled in when your system is serviced. You can also have you fire extinguishers serviced to make sure all the pressures are correct.

In premises such as airports, government buildings or universities the risk of terrorist attack is always there. So if you work in a place such as this, and this type of threat applies this will also be part of your role as a fire warden. In places like Northern Ireland where the recent events have tested every emergency service in the area. Fire wardens and marshals have played their part in protection people in their buildings and saving lives.
